What made you interested in Maternal Mental Health as a specialty?
I had been working with children and families for years, but when I had my own children, I was humbled by how much I didn’t know. The support and help of others ended up being crucial, not only for my personal happiness but also for my ability to gain confidence as a mom. I started my private practice in 2017. As a parent of a then 3 year old, I found I really enjoyed working with new moms. In 2018 I learned that there was a new certification focusing exclusively on the perinatal population. I soon dedicated myself to getting the necessary training and was one of the early recipients of a PMH-C. Years later I continue to feel honored to support women through the journey from conception through motherhood.
What is your approach to therapy and educational background?
I love helping clients learn how to reduce stress, gain confidence and enjoy their life to the fullest. I understand the unexpected highs, lows and emotional challenges that come with motherhood from both a personal and professional standpoint. My work focuses on supportive counseling, trauma healing, confidence building, and sharing honest feedback to help you become your truest and best self. I believe in taking a supportive, collaborative approach to help you reach your goals. I use a mix of supportive psychotherapy, CBT, interpersonal therapy and EMDR to address client’s needs. My educational background includes earning a Master of Social Work degree from New York University with a focus in Clinical Practice. I have a Bachelor of Arts degree from Hampshire College in Amherst, MA, where I focused on the interplay of healing physical symptoms through emotional support for people with chronic health conditions. I have completed post-graduate training in trauma care, perinatal mental health, infertility issues and pregnancy loss.
What do you like to do when you are not working?
I see self care as a joy and a necessity. When I am not working I love being active and outside, in the water or the mountains. I also take time to relax, read, and chill with my family. I love learning and having new experiences and adventures. Prior to moving to Hawaii in 2007, I traveled as much as I could and lived in California, Oregon, Massachusetts, New York and Connecticut.

What made you interested in Maternal Mental Health as a specialty?
Parenting and Early Childhood Development have always been my passion. After years of working with families in a variety of settings in Hawaii (Preschool Teacher, Special Needs Care Coordinator, Early Childhood Specialist), I had my first child in 2016. With all of my expertise and training, I had thought that I was well-equipped to be a mom. It was shocking that no one had told me it could be so hard. I knew about postpartum depression, but I had not heard about postpartum anxiety. During the first 6 months, I did not leave my baby once, and as I started to learn more about my symptoms it became clear that what I was experiencing (postpartum anxiety) was common, but not normal. This experience encouraged me to get my own therapist and to learn about perinatal mood and anxiety disorders and how to support other families before, during, and after the transition to motherhood. In 2021, I had my pandemic baby. Once again, learning how to navigate parenting, but in a different way, in a new online landscape of unlimited (and often conflicting) parenting advice, limited childcare, and fear-mongering. Now that the sleep deprivation of early motherhood is in my past, my desire to help others during this is stronger than ever.
What is your approach to therapy and educational background?
My approach to therapy is very unique to the families I work with. By utilizing my extensive training, background, and parenting experience I support my clients during their particular stage of parenthood. I use a combination of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, traditional talk therapy, coaching, psychoeducation, processing, and normalization. As needed we spend time postpartum planning, birth story processing, or incorporating cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I). I have extensive experience working with the military population and have learned about the many unique challenges they face during the perinatal period. I am a Licenced Clinical Social Worker with an MSW degree from Hawaii Pacific University. I have obtained my Perinatal Mental Health Certification (PMH-C) through Postpartum Support International (PSI) and completed trainings in Perinatal Mental Health, Pregnancy and Infant Loss, Birth Trauma, Infertility, and Third-Party Reproduction. I am a member of Postpartum Support International and part of the inaugural board of the local PSI chapter. In addition, I am a 2020MOM Speaking Ambassador which encourages me to follow my passion of advocating for more support for moms and educating the community about the challenges families face.
What do you like to do when you are not working?
I love to be outdoors and in nature. Born and raised in a mountain town in Colorado (Steamboat Springs), I grew up playing in the woods and in the snow. After college, I traveled around the world (US Virgin Islands, Maui, Honduras, Mozambique, Thialand, Phillipines)working as a scuba instructor exploring both nature and different cultures before coming to Oahu for my Master's in Social Work in 2010. Now when I am not working I love to read, go to the beach with my family, listen to live music, hike, do Zumba, and spend time with friends.
